Sulphurous Freeze Approaches: Temperatures Plunge to –15 °C, IMGW Issues Alerts

Polish meteorological institute IMGW warned of a severe frost and freezing precipitation, issuing cold alerts as temperatures are poised to plummet to –15 °C overnight.

IMGW Issues Frost Alerts

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued first‑degree alerts cautioning against severe frost and freezing precipitation. The alerts for severe frost will be in effect from 22:00 on Thursday, 25 December until 08:00 on Friday in the Silesian, Lesser Poland and Subcarpathian voivodeships.

Alerts concerning freezing precipitation apply to the Podlaskie, Masovian, Lublin and Warmian‑Masurian voivodeships. These warnings will be valid at different times on Friday, with the longest lasting until 22:00 in the central and eastern regions of the country.

Temperatures to Drop to –15°C Overnight

At night, temperatures may fall to as low as –15 °C in some places. IMGW forecasts that from Thursday to Friday night the Carpathian Basin will see local temperatures as low as –15 °C. Other regions are also expected to cool: a minimum of –12 °C in Subcarpathia, about –9 °C in the centre, and –4 °C in the Suwałki region.

Observations at the coast will register around –1 °C.

Friday’s Weather Outlook

On Friday, meteorologists anticipate widespread cloud cover across most of Poland. In the southeast, light snowfall or a drizzle of freezing snow mists that could produce frost may occur.

Maximum temperatures will range from –2 °C in the south, about 1 °C in the centre, to 5 °C along the coast. Winds will be weak and moderate, with occasional gusts on the east.
