Supreme Court President Candidates to Be Selected in February

The Supreme Court will select candidates for its president in February, following a move by Justice Manowska that’s seen as a potential confrontation with the government.

Re-election Scenario

Such a necessity occurs when the incumbent President of the Supreme Court cannot hold this office due to an intention to seek re-election. Manowska’s decision has therefore sparked speculation that she may want to once again head the Supreme Court, although she herself claims that such a scenario is unlikely.

Political Implications

Filing the described application with the Constitutional Tribunal is also seen as a confrontation with the government, which may result in making it difficult or even preventing the election of a new President of the Supreme Court in a way that would not cause political controversy.

Vacant Position

Manowska explains that due to the regulations challenged before the tribunal to this day, it has not been possible to elect a President of the Supreme Court heading the Labor and Social Insurance Chamber. This position has been vacant since September 2024, when Piotr Prusinowski vacated it due to the expiry of his term.
