Poland’s Supreme Court judges will gather on February 24 to select candidates for the position of First President.
Supreme Court Announces Selection Timeline
The General Assembly of Supreme Court judges will select five candidates for the position of First President of the Supreme Court. One of these candidates will be appointed by the President for a six-year term.
Potential Conflict Over Assembly Leadership
Unofficial information suggests that the current First President may run for another term, which would prevent her from presiding over the assembly. In such a case, the President would need to appoint a judge for this role, which requires the Prime Minister’s countersignature.
This has led to another conflict, as the First President has challenged this requirement to the Constitutional Court, arguing it paralyzes the judiciary.
Current First President’s Term Ending
Małgorzata Manowska was appointed to her position on May 26, 2020. Her current term will expire in May of this year.
