Donald Tusk ran unopposed in Civic Coalition elections, but regional races produced unexpected results with recounts ordered in Lower Silesia.
Election Process
Sunday’s Civic Coalition leadership elections were conducted through traditional in-person voting. Election committees sat in local party offices across Poland, issuing ballots and counting votes at day’s end. Donald Tusk was the sole candidate for party leader, though his results remain unknown as vote counting continues.
Lower Silesia: Close Race Calls for Recount
Regional results show interesting patterns, with the most emotions in Lower Silesia. According to our findings, Sejm Vice-Marshal Monika Wielichowska narrowly lost the leadership race by a small margin. Due to the extremely narrow difference, votes are being recounted in Wrocław. If confirmed, Michał Jaros, Deputy Minister of Development and Technology, will remain KO chairman for Lower Silesia.
Subcarpathia: Upset Victory
A major surprise occurred in Subcarpathia, where Sejm Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Paweł Kowal defeated MP Joanna Frydrych. Just days ago, the Subcarpathian KO suggested his opponent had better chances due to her longer party tenure and stronger regional ties, while Kowal was perceived by some as an outsider. Current regional leader MP Zdzisław Gawlik did not seek re-election.
Lubusz: Incumbent Defeated
In Lubusz, the current long-time structure leader MP Waldemar Sługocki lost to Lubusz Voivode Marek Cebula. The voivode received support several days ago from MP Elżbieta Polak, who also sought power in the Lubusz KO but ultimately withdrew her candidacy.
Expected Results in Other Regions
Results were predictable in Greater Poland, Opole, and Lublin regions, where current chairmen (Senate Vice-Marshal Rafał Grupiński, MEP Andrzej Buła, former MP Stanisław Żmijan) did not seek re-election, deciding to step aside for younger party colleagues. In Greater Poland, MP Jarosław Urbaniak defeated Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki. In Opole, former MP Robert Węgrzyn won decisively against current MP Tomasz Kostuś. In Lublin, MP Michał Krawczyk defeated MEP Marta Wcisło.
Official Results Pending
All these results are currently unofficial. Official results will be announced Monday at 10:00 AM at the KO headquarters in Warsaw.
