NATO’s Potential Role
Last week, Polish Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that NATO should introduce a no-fly zone over Ukraine. He noted that while NATO and the EU have the technical capabilities to do so, it would require a joint decision with allies.
Sikorski emphasized that protecting Polish civilians from falling debris would be easier if drones and other flying objects could be intercepted outside of Polish territory.
Recent Russian Attack on Ukraine
Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine, using nearly 600 drones and 40 missiles of various types. The attack resulted in civilian casualties and damage to several regions and cities, including Dnipro, Mykolaiv, and the Kyiv region.
Ukrainian forces managed to shoot down or neutralize 552 of 579 long-range Russian drones and some ballistic missiles. However, some missiles hit their targets, causing significant damage.
