An unidentified balloon was discovered on April 11th in Duchnów, Otwock County, prompting authorities to investigate potential smuggling activity.
Unidentified Balloon Discovered
On Saturday, April 11th, an unidentified balloon was found in Duchnów, Otwock County. A local resident discovered the object while walking in the forest, away from buildings, and alerted the police.
Police secured the area and initiated an investigation. Initial findings suggest the balloon may have been used to smuggle cigarettes from Belarus.
No Immediate Contraband Found
As of now, no packages of contraband, SIM cards, or GPS devices have been found attached to the balloon. Police in Otwock conducted a pyrotechnic assessment and preliminarily determined the object poses no threat to residents.
Investigators are now examining whether any cargo may have been dropped earlier or detached during flight.
Similar Incident Reported Earlier
This incident echoes a similar event from less than two weeks prior. On March 28th, authorities intervened in Rudnik, near Mińsk Mazowiecki, following a report of an unidentified object in the forest.
It was determined to be smuggling balloons carrying 4,000 packs of cigarettes lacking Polish excise stamps. No one was injured, but the scale of the discovery indicated this method of smuggling was beyond isolated experimentation.
Broader Smuggling Operation Under Investigation
Police recently dismantled a group operating in the Mazovia and Lublin regions, suspected of smuggling cigarettes from Belarus using GPS-equipped balloons. Four individuals were arrested on March 31st in connection with this case.
On April 10th, police in Warmia and Masuria again received reports of balloons with packages of cigarettes lacking Polish excise stamps.
Smuggling Route Suspected
Therefore, the discovery near Otwock is being treated as more than a mere curiosity. While no illegal cargo has yet been found in Duchnów, the method of operation, location, and similarities to previous cases lead authorities to seriously investigate the smuggling connection.
The coming hours will reveal whether this was another element of a larger smuggling route leading from the east into Mazovia.
