Municipal guards and firefighters rescued a swan frozen to ice on Warsaw’s Vistula River after a passerby spotted the injured bird.
Emergency Response
Municipal guards and firefighters rescued a swan frozen to ice on the Vistula River in Warsaw on February 3. The operation began after a passerby spotted the distressed animal and called the emergency number 986.
Challenging Rescue Operation
The situation was serious, with the swan located approximately 15 meters from the riverbank. Due to difficult conditions and the significant distance from shore, independent rescue was not possible. Municipal guards called for firefighter assistance to safely bring the swan to land.
Recovery Process
The rescued swan was secured and transported to Bird Sanctuary at the Warsaw Zoo. Veterinary staff provided the bird with shelter, warmth, and food. The swan was severely weakened and undernourished due to difficulty accessing food, but veterinarians estimate it should regain full strength within the next few days.
Wildlife Protection Reminder
The Warsaw Municipal Guard operates an Eco Patrol specifically designated to help birds and small mammals in the city area. Residents are encouraged to call 986 if they encounter animals that require assistance.
