Szeptycki’s UPA Comments Spark Calls for Dismissal Amid Government Tension

Deputy Science Minister Andrzej Szeptycki faces intense political pressure after comparing the UPA to the Polish “Cursed Soldiers,” prompting demands for his resignation from the opposition.

Controversial Comparison

In a June 5 interview on TOK FM, Deputy Minister Andrzej Szeptycki described the UPA as “Ukrainian Cursed Soldiers,” noting they fought for Ukraine’s independence against the Soviets. He acknowledged the term carried both positive and negative connotations.

Government Stance on Dismissal

Government officials suggest that while Prime Minister Donald Tusk could dismiss a minister for incompetence, he is unlikely to act solely due to opposition pressure. Members of the ruling coalition indicated that removing Szeptycki would destabilize the government’s current structure.

Support from Pełczyńska-Nałęcz

Minister Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz defended Szeptycki, confirming he will remain in the cabinet. She characterized criticism of his Ukrainian heritage as a “nightmare” perpetuated by neo-fascist sentiments.

Opposition Demands Resignation

PiS candidate for Prime Minister Przemysław Czarnek labeled the comments a “national betrayal,” calling for the entire government’s resignation. Meanwhile, Marcin Przydacz of the President’s Office condemned the comparison to Polish heroes and urged the coalition partners to demand Szeptycki’s immediate removal.
