Following a forced entry into the President’s mother’s apartment due to a false alarm on May 23, government spokesperson Adam Szłapka stated the President never requested official protection for the property.
The Incident and Security Protocols
On May 23, emergency services forcibly entered a Gdańsk apartment co-owned by the President and his mother following two false reports: one alleging a fire and threat to life, and a second reporting cardiac arrest. The apartment was found empty.
Emergency meetings were subsequently held at the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, led by Minister Marcin Kierwiński, followed by a briefing with Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Government Stance on Protection
During a Tuesday press conference, spokesperson Adam Szłapka addressed questions regarding why the property lacked State Protection Service (SOP) coverage. He clarified that protected individuals, such as the President or Prime Minister, must formally request coverage for specific properties.
Szłapka emphasized that no such application was filed for this apartment. He noted that agencies must operate according to set procedures and refuted claims that the entry was a result of an independent service decision.
Regulatory Framework for Property Security
Under the SOP Act, official protection does not automatically extend to the private residences of family members. Security may only be provided if the President or Prime Minister is present, if a specific security threat exists, or if the site has been designated for operational protection.
Presidential spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz argued that focusing on the property’s ownership ignores the systemic failure regarding false reports. He urged authorities to address the wave of fake alerts currently paralyzing state services.
Widespread False Alarms
Between May 10 and 15, police responded to 12 false reports involving bomb threats and health hazards, including incidents at the home of the TV Republika editor-in-chief and Jarosław Kaczyński’s property.
A specialized team including cybersecurity experts and the Internal Security Agency has been formed to investigate these provocations. Minister Kierwiński confirmed that five individuals have been detained in connection with these false alarms.
Prime Minister Tusk dismissed criticism from PiS politicians—who labeled the emergency intervention as an attack on the President—as either extreme cynicism or ignorance, reiterating that those responsible for these provocations must be apprehended.
