Szymon Hołownia Elected as Poland’s New Sejm Marshal

On 18 November, the Polish Sejm elected Szymon Hołownia marshal after 261 votes in favour, 14 against and 162 abstentions, following a joint decision by the coalition.

In the Sejm session held at 8:00 am, Szymon Hołownia received 261 votes of support, 14 opposed and 162 abstentions, securing the marshalship according to the coalition agreement.

Hołownia’s Background

Former politician Szymon Hołownia is praised for his intelligence, erudition and empathy, traits highlighted by colleagues during his management of parliamentary sessions and recognised by political allies such as Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz.

New Marshal Assumes Office

On the same day, Hołownia stepped down as marshal and was replaced by Włodzimierz Czarzasty of the Left. The new marshal was elected with 236 votes in favour, 209 against and two abstentions.

Coalition Support and Opposition Reaction

Hołownia thanked the coalition that backed him, declaring his commitment to be a hard‑working, loyal and predictable member of the governing alliance, while Members of PiS shouted “away from communism.”
