A primary school teacher in Mrągowo, Poland, has been confirmed with tuberculosis, and health authorities are investigating hundreds of students and staff who may have been exposed.
Teacher Confirmed with Tuberculosis
The teacher of a primary school in Mrągowo had been complaining of respiratory problems for months. Only recently was a diagnosis made, and Sanepid confirmed the disease is tuberculosis. According to inspector Janusz Dzisko, the teacher may have infected others.
Authorities Trace Hundreds of Potential Contacts
Sanepid is determining who may have come into contact with the teacher, including both pupils and school staff. Unofficial reports suggest that several hundred individuals, including children attending tutoring sessions, could be tested. Doctors will decide which tests are used for each person.
School Refuses Comment
The school has not provided information about the situation. Management only briefly assured cooperation with Sanepid and stated that parents of exposed students will be informed and advised not to disregard medical recommendations.
Tuberculosis: Symptoms and Transmission
Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and it remains one of the most common infectious diseases worldwide. Recent cases have also been confirmed in a refugee centre in Kętrzyn. Symptoms include a cough lasting more than three weeks, fever, night sweats, loss of appetite and weakness. The disease spreads by droplets, with the most common source being individuals infected at the contagious phase.
