Seventeen-year-old Dominik Hołuj suffered life-altering injuries after becoming trapped in the doors of a Koleje Mazowieckie train in Wola Bierwiecka on February 14, leading to the loss of his legs and fingers.
Details of the accident
The incident occurred on Saturday, February 14, at approximately 12:00 PM at a railway stop in Wola Bierwiecka near Radom. While attempting to help unload a stroller from a train, 17-year-old Dominik Hołuj had his hand caught in the closing doors. Unable to free himself before the train departed, he was pulled under the moving vehicle, resulting in the amputation of his legs and fingers on his right hand.
Proposed assistance from the carrier
Koleje Mazowieckie has reached out to the victim with a formal support package. Company spokesperson Donata Nowakowska confirmed they are offering material aid and a scholarship program to help the teenager pursue professional interests. The company has also expressed a willingness to employ Dominik, who has reportedly voiced an interest in working within the rail sector to improve safety standards.
Fleet modernization and safety measures
Following the tragedy, Koleje Mazowieckie has initiated a phase-out of older rolling stock. The accident involved an EN57 series train, of which 139 units remain in operation. The carrier plans to retire 38 first-generation units between this year and next, replacing them with modern Flirt trains.
Deployment of new rolling stock
The company aims to have over 120 new Flirt trains in service by the end of 2026, with nine already delivered. Radosław Banach, head of the Polish division of Stadler, stated that 53 units are scheduled for delivery this year, noting that one train now leaves the production line every week to meet the demands of the modernization program.
