It noted that while Russia loses soldiers faster than Ukraine, its numerical advantage remains. A Trump-led deal, described as “much faster and less predictable,” would threaten Ukraine’s long-term security.
Zelenskyy faces immense pressure
The Economist highlighted that territorial concessions in a settlement would place Ukraine and Europe in a precarious position. Trump could halt military aid, impose tariffs on Europe, or jeopardize U.S. support for NATO. Zelenskyy’s refusal might trigger further Russian aggression, risking a renewed invasion.
NATO Secretary-General on security guarantees for Ukraine
On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Rutte emphasized a two-tiered security approach: first, a peace deal or prolonged ceasefire; second, guarantees from Europe and the U.S. He stated that cooperation with Ukraine and allies aims to ensure Putin will never again attempt to invade.
Future talks remain uncertain
No timeline for a U.S.-Ukraine-Russia summit or a Ukraine-Russia meeting has been set. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated Putin is ready for talks with a clear presidential agenda, while Zelenskyy accused Russia of blocking negotiations. He stressed the need for strong sanctions if diplomacy fails, urging partners to ensure Russia does not evade discussions.
