The Legacy of Krzysztof Piesiewicz: A Lawyer and Chronicler of Human Condition

Krzysztof Piesiewicz, the renowned Polish lawyer, screenwriter, and longtime collaborator of Krzysztof Kieślowski, has died at 80; his career was defined by his pursuit of justice and cinematic storytelling.

A life of legal and cinematic significance

The death of Krzysztof Piesiewicz was announced on May 14 by Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska. A distinguished lawyer and celebrated screenwriter, he was best known for his collaborative work with director Krzysztof Kieślowski.

Senator Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska paid tribute to Piesiewicz, noting his vital role in cinema history and his contributions as a lawyer. His family and loved ones have received formal expressions of condolence.

Collaborations with Krzysztof Kieślowski

Piesiewicz co-authored 17 film scripts with Krzysztof Kieślowski. His writing garnered international acclaim, including a Felix European Film Award and an Oscar nomination for “Three Colors: Red.”

His screenplays, such as the “Decalogue” series, have been translated into ten languages. Director Tom Tykwer also adapted his work for the film “Heaven.”

A high price for justice

Before his film career, Piesiewicz was a legendary advocate for the “Solidarity” movement. He served as a subsidiary prosecutor in the trial of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko’s murderers and defended Colonel Ryszard Kukliński.

His commitment to these cases came at a heavy personal cost. His mother, Aniela, was murdered, with her body found bound in a manner reminiscent of the brutal slaying of Father Popiełuszko.

Reflections on the legal profession

In an interview with “Rzeczpospolita,” Piesiewicz described his early years as a lawyer as the happiest time of his life, noting, “I was lucky to defend people who were capable of heroism in difficult times.”

He admitted that while his professional journey required significant sacrifices, he remained firm in his belief that law is a beautiful profession. He will be buried on May 20 at the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw.
