A 20-year-old man fleeing police on a stolen bicycle unexpectedly joined the Ślężański Mnich race in Lower Silesia, briefly leading the pack.
Escape Straight Into the Competition
Scenes reminiscent of an action movie unfolded in Lower Silesia during a cycling race in Sobótka, where a thief unexpectedly appeared among the competitors.
The 20-year-old entered the race on a stolen bicycle—valued at more than a 15-year-old Ford—not only joining the course but also overtaking the peloton and reaching the front of the race.
He now faces potential imprisonment instead of a gold medal.
A Bicycle Worth More Than a Car
Police in Sobótka noticed the 20-year-old, known for previous thefts, riding professional, branded equipment worth tens of thousands of zlotys on April 12, 2026, according to RMF FM.
Upon seeing the police car, the thief fled, entering the secured route of the “Ślężański Mnich” race in Lower Silesia to evade capture.
Discarding Evidence During the Chase
During the ride, the thief attempted to dispose of evidence by throwing a professional bicycle navigation system onto the roadside.
His motivation fueled his ability to overtake the cycling peloton and briefly reach the front of the race.
Police emphasize that the fit thief posed a real threat to the competitors and security personnel.
However, officers apprehended him after a short pursuit.
Recovered Goods Valued at Over 28,000 Zlotys
The recovered items represent a significant material value, totaling over 28,000 zlotys.
Facing Charges Instead of a Podium Finish
The daring ride did not bring the fleeing man victory, but rather charges.
The 20-year-old confessed to the theft and now faces up to 5 years in prison.
The stolen equipment has been returned to its rightful owner.
