Unofficial reports reveal a potential NATO-US agreement granting the US control over parts of Greenland for military bases.
Agreement on US Military Bases in Greenland
“The New York Times” has unofficially reported that an agreement between NATO and the United States would involve transferring parts of Greenland’s territory under US sovereignty. On these lands, Americans could potentially build military bases.
Comparisons to UK Bases in Cyprus
“The New York Times” cited information obtained from three high-ranking officials familiar with the negotiation details. Two sources compared the Greenland agreement to the solution used in Cyprus. The United Kingdom maintains military bases there, recognized as British territory. American bases on Greenland would operate under similar principles.
NATO’s Objective: Preventing Russian and Chinese Footholds
NATO representatives did not respond to “The New York Times” questions about the agreement’s specifics. The North Atlantic Alliance stated only that “negotiations between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States will continue to ensure that Russia and China never gain economic or military footholds in Greenland.”
White House Spokesperson’s Remarks
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that the agreement’s details must still be discussed by all parties involved before becoming public. “If this agreement is approved, and President Trump has great hope that it will, the US will achieve all its strategic goals in Greenland forever at a very small cost,” Leavitt emphasized.
Donald Trump’s Meeting with Mark Rutte
On Wednesday, January 21st, Donald Trump met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Following the meeting, the US President posted on Truth Social: “We have established the framework for a future agreement concerning Greenland, and in essence, the entire Arctic region. This solution – if finalized – will be highly beneficial to the United States and all NATO countries.”
