Threats Against President Karol Nawrocki Confirmed by Government

Polish officials report another online threat targeting President Karol Nawrocki, with the Digital Ministry confirming a reckless post on X calling for attack.

Threat on X Platform

Minister of Digital Affairs Marek Gieorgica confirmed a post on X that contained “suggestion or encouragement of an attack on the President of Poland.” The incident follows similar threats in recent weeks. Vice‑premier Krzysztof Gawkowski posted on X that the government is monitoring illegal content, especially threats against high‑profile officials.

Role of the Digital Services Act

Gawkowski said European DSA rules are designed to facilitate quick removal of such content. A Polish bill aligning with the DSA is still under parliamentary debate and will soon be presented to the president for signature. Currently, moderation of platforms determines the speed of removal.

Police Action and Arrests

A 19‑year‑old Polish citizen was arrested last week after posting a photo of the president holding a pistol with the caption “see you, Karol.” He faced charges of threatening offence, pleaded guilty, and received a police supervision notice, a travel ban near the president’s residence, and a ban from the Presidential Chancellery.

Understanding the Digital Services Act

The DSA is a broad regulation that imposes responsibility on online platforms for published content and obliges swift action on illegal posts. Polish lawmakers are working to adapt local rules to the DSA. Once in force, individuals and state bodies could request blocking of posts infringing the law, covering 27 crime categories, including criminal threats.
