Three Qatari Diplomats Killed in Car Crash Near Sharm el‑Sheikh Before Gaza Peace Summit

A fatal motor‑vehicle collision near Egypt’s Sharm el‑Sheikh on Sunday took the lives of three Qatari diplomats and left two others injured as they were en route to negotiate a Gaza ceasefire.

Fatal Accident

A car carrying five Qatari officials and an Egyptian driver overturned on a bend about 50 km from Sharm el‑Sheikh on Saturday night, according to the Qatari embassy. The crash, caused by loss of vehicle control, killed three diplomats and injured two.

Peace Summit Preparations

The summit on October 13 at Sharm el‑Sheikh will bring together more than 20 heads of state and presidents of the US and Egypt, Donald Trump and Abdel Fattah al‑Sisi, to discuss ending the Gaza war. Leaders such as France’s Emmanuel Macron, the UK’s Keir Starmer, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Spain’s Pedro Sanchez and UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres have pledged to attend.

First Phase of Gaza Peace Plan

On Thursday, leaders from Israel and Hamas agreed on the first phase of a Gaza peace plan; the Israeli army announced a ceasefire on Friday. By Monday, 20 Israeli hostages taken two years earlier are set to return, while Hamas will release bodies of 28 people and Israel will free almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. 200 U.S. troops will supervise the ceasefire without entering Gaza. The conflict began after a Hamas attack on Israel, killing about 1,200 Israelis and about 67,000 Gazans, mostly women and children.
