The TISZA party, led by Péter Magyar, won a constitutional majority in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, prompting congratulations from Viktor Orbán and reactions from Polish leaders.
Election Results in Hungary
Preliminary data from the Hungarian National Election Office, after counting nearly 99% of the votes, indicates that TISZA is projected to secure 138 seats in the 199-member parliament.
This majority will allow TISZA to amend the constitution and overturn laws enacted during Viktor Orbán’s 16 years in power.
Fidesz-KDNP and Other Parties
The Fidesz-KDNP coalition is expected to receive 55 mandates. The far-right Our Homeland Movement (MiHazánk) is also projected to gain representation in parliament, potentially securing six seats.
Reactions from Polish Leaders
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke with TISZA leader Péter Magyar, discussing a potential visit to Warsaw. Tusk expressed confidence in a “unique” relationship between the two countries.
Tusk also posted on X, stating, “Hungary, Poland, Europe together again! Great victory, dear friends! Ruszkik haza!” (“Ruszkik haza” means “Russians go home” in Hungarian).
Péter Magyar’s Victory Speech
Péter Magyar declared victory, stating, “We did it. TISZA and Hungary won the elections. And not barely, but very. Very, very we won. Together we liberated Hungary.”
He thanked voters for approximately 3.3 million votes, stating they had given TISZA the mandate to build a homeland for all Hungarians.
Gratitude to Supporters
Magyar expressed gratitude to “all Hungarians at home and around the world” in a Facebook post. He stated that the record number of votes authorized them to form a government focused on a free, European, functioning, and humane Hungary for the next four years.
He affirmed that the TISZA government would be a government for all Hungarians.
