Official results from Hungary’s elections show the TISZA party, led by Péter Magyar, has won a parliamentary majority, signaling a significant shift after 16 years of FIDESZ governance.
TISZA Party Gains Qualified Majority
The TISZA party, led by Péter Magyar, secured 141 seats in the 199-member National Assembly. This result grants the party a qualified majority of 133 seats, enabling constitutional and legal changes.
FIDESZ-KDNP Suffers Major Losses
The alliance of Viktor Orbán’s FIDESZ and the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) will hold 52 seats in parliament. Six remaining seats went to the far-right Our Homeland movement. Voter turnout exceeded 80 percent, with approximately 6.4 million votes cast.
Voting System and Results Breakdown
Hungary’s elections involve 106 deputies elected in single-member constituencies and 93 from national party lists. Approximately 3.4 million voters supported TISZA on the national list, while the FIDESZ-KDNP coalition received around 2.5 million.
In single-member constituencies, TISZA garnered over 3.3 million votes, and FIDESZ-KDNP received 2.2 million.
Magyar Declares End of ‘Two-Decade Nightmare’
Péter Magyar described April 12, 2026, as marking the end of a “two-decade nightmare” and the culmination of a two-year journey of Hungarian renewal. The new government is expected to be sworn in mid-May.
FIDESZ Representation Significantly Reduced
During the outgoing National Assembly, the FIDESZ-KDNP coalition held 135 seats. Following the elections, the alliance’s representation will decrease by 83 seats.
Orbán Acknowledges ‘Shock’ and Calls for Renewal
Viktor Orbán stated he is “trying to come to terms” with the scale of the defeat, acknowledging the need for a “complete renewal” of the Hungarian right-wing. He has begun a process of renewal within the party, including plans to convene a congress to elect new leadership.
Dispute Over Sarvar Constituency Results
Péter Magyar demanded a revote in a single-member constituency where a candidate with the same name ran as an independent. In Sarvar, Peter Agh (Fidesz) won with 46.26% of the vote, Viktoria Strompova (TISZA) received 45.79%, and the independent Peter Magyar received 1.6%.
Magyar accused FIDESZ of employing a “proxy candidate” to mislead voters and called on Agh to relinquish the mandate to allow for a revote.
Reporting from Orbán’s Village
Journalists have faced a less welcoming reception in Viktor Orbán’s village following the election results. Orbán’s modest home is located in Felcsut, surrounded by properties owned by his family worth hundreds of millions of złoty.
