TISZA Party Secures Hungarian Majority, Orban Concedes

The TISZA party won a constitutional majority in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, prompting celebrations and congratulations from outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

TISZA Victory and Celebrations

The TISZA party has secured a constitutional majority in Hungary. Viktor Orban congratulated Peter Magyar on his victory. Journalists from Wyborcza.pl, TOK FM, and RadioZet are reporting live from the scene.

Many politicians associated with TISZA were seen dancing on stage during a rally in Budapest, including Zsolt Hegedus, the candidate for Minister of Health in the new government. A video of Hegedus was published on Instagram by journalist Noémi Zalavári and quickly gained popularity.

Zsolt Hegedus: Background

Zsolt Hegedus is an orthopedic surgeon with over 30 years of experience, including work in the United Kingdom. He was appointed head of the expert team dealing with healthcare issues within the TISZA party, working alongside leader Péter Magyar.

Healthcare Concerns in Hungary

Hegedus stated last year that organizational and infrastructural shortcomings in Hungary make it difficult for doctors – and consequently, patients – to feel supported. He criticized Fidesz for failing to develop a long-term healthcare strategy in 2010, leading to a constant cycle of crisis management.

Election Results Breakdown

With nearly 99% of votes counted, TISZA is projected to win 138 seats in the 199-seat parliament, giving them the majority needed to amend the constitution and overturn laws passed during Viktor Orban’s 16 years in power.

Parliamentary Composition

The Fidesz-KDNP coalition is expected to receive 55 seats. The far-right Our Homeland Movement (MiHazank) is also likely to gain representation in parliament, potentially securing six seats.

Magyar’s Victory Speech

“We did it. TISZA and Hungary have won the election. And not barely, but very. Very, very much. Together, we have liberated Hungary,” said TISZA leader Péter Magyar after the initial results were announced. He emphasized the unprecedented level of support received, citing approximately 3.3 million votes, granting them a mandate to build a country for all Hungarians.

Magyar stated, “Thank you to all Hungarians at home and around the world! It is a great honor that you have given us a mandate to form a government, casting the largest number of votes in history, and to work for a free, European, efficiently functioning, and humane Hungary for the next four years.”
