Tough Talks in Berlin: Media Report Stiff Disagreements Between US and Ukraine

In Berlin on Sunday, delegations from the United States and Ukraine engaged in tense negotiations over ending the conflict with Russia, with media outlets reporting key sticking points.

Reports on US‑Ukraine Talks

In Berlin on Sunday, negotiations were held between delegations from the United States and Ukraine to finalize the conflict with Russia. Ukrainian portal UNN cited reports from the WallStreet Journal on the discussions, describing them as “hard.” A primary sticking point involved Ukraine’s withdrawal from Donbas, a demand Washington is pressing for, but which Ukrainian officials refuse to agree to. Delegates also demanded a clear U.S. plan for action if Russia breaches a peace deal. The Trump Administration is urging Ukraine to negotiate a peace treaty by year‑end.

Tusk Heads to Berlin

In a Sunday meeting in Berlin attended by Volodymyr Zelenskiy and special envoy Steve Witkoff, talks lasted over five hours. The diplomats discussed a 20‑point peace plan, economic issues, and other matters. “We made substantial progress and will meet again tomorrow,” Witkoff posted on X. On Monday, European leaders will join, including Poland’s Donald Tusk; government spokesman Adam Szłapka confirmed his participation. Other negotiators will include France’s president and the British prime minister. Szłapka noted that since the start of the Berlin talks, a prime‑minister security adviser and Minister Robert Kupiecki have been involved.

Kallas: Russians Will Go Further

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned that Russia demands the entirety of Donbas, including territories still under Ukrainian control, in negotiations over ending the war. She said that if Ukraine loses Donbas, the entire country will be threatened. Kallas said, “We must understand that Donbas is not Putin’s final objective; if he captures it, the next step will be to take the rest of Ukraine.” She urged learning from history for this warning.
