Tourist Falls Nearly 400 Meters in Tatra Mountains; Military Helicopter Ramps In

A female tourist slipped and fell about 400 meters on the Rysy trail in the Tatra Mountains on the morning of Saturday, December 6, prompting a military helicopter rescue.

Incident on Rysy Trail

According to TVN24, the accident occurred the morning of Saturday, December 6 on the trail leading to Rysy. The ascending tourist either tripped or snagged on a rock, losing balance and falling along the steep section until she eventually halted.

Injuries and Rescue

The woman sustained injuries that were not life‑threatening. “We can speak of great fortune because she fell about 400 meters,” reported on‑duty officer Rafał Mikler of the Tatra Mountain Volunteer Rescue Service in an interview with TVN24. Media noted that the fall was cushioned by relatively soft snow; nevertheless, a military helicopter was dispatched to the site, after which TOPR rescuers provided assistance.

Avalanche Conditions in Tatras

The Tatras currently have avalanche danger level one. TOPR explained that the snow cover is well bonded and stable; avalanches can usually be triggered only by significant additional load in a few spots on very steep or extreme slopes, while small and medium avalanches may move spontaneously. Conditions are therefore relatively favorable for descending, but tourists are advised to exercise extra caution, especially on very steep or extreme slopes.
