Five German tourists built a motorized floating sauna on an ice floe near Sweden’s Stockholm archipelago before losing control when a passing wave broke the ice.

Tourists Build Sauna on Ice

Five German tourists placed a tent with a sauna and an engine onto an ice floe to create a “motorized floating sauna”.

A wave generated by a passing ferry caused them to lose control as the ice began to crack and break apart, leaving them stranded near Värmdö, the largest island in the Stockholm archipelago.

Rescue and Commentary

The tourists were rescued by the ferry crew. A witness told SVT.se, “The ice couldn’t withstand the pressure and broke into several pieces.”

Karolina Wichman, spokesperson for Stockholm’s transport authority, commented to The Guardian on the frequent incidents involving ice, noting, “In Stockholm and across Sweden, it’s mainly skaters who need maritime assistance or fall through the ice. This was truly a spectacular sight.”
