At 1:32 a.m. on 3 September, an empty coal wagon detached from the Katowice‑Ligota railway line, sparking speculation of a planned attack.
Uncertainty Over Intent
“Rzeczpospolita” reported that the night‑time incident on the Katowice‑Ligota line “looks like a planned attack.” An empty coal wagon was detached at 1:32 a.m. on 3 September. The detached wagon appeared normal because another wagon’s end‑of‑train switches had been moved onto the preceding unit.
Safety Office Allegations
Former PKP PLK safety office director Piotr Skolasiński said the person who detached the wagon also removed the warning signal and attached it to the second‑to‑last wagon, indicating intentional tampering and an attempt to cover the act.
Risk of Catastrophe
Skolasiński warned that if a rushing train entered the wagon, a derailment could have led to a serious railway accident. The situation was averted by a worker who notified the traffic duty and supervisors.
Investigation Status
The Katowice‑West District Prosecutor’s Office is conducting a preliminary inquiry. No charges have been filed. The police similarly refrain from providing further details for the sake of the investigation.
