Spanish authorities reported that three people died and 15 were injured when massive waves swept across the northern coast of Tenerife on Saturday.
Dutch Tourist Drowning in Puerto de la Cruz
A 79‑year‑old Dutch national was swept into the sea after ignoring warnings, and her heart stopped before rescuers could revive her. She died at the scene. Her death occurred outside the Puerto de la Cruz area, where nine other casualties were brought to shore safely.
Spanish Fisherman Dies While Fishing Near Charco del Viento
A 43‑year‑old Spaniard fell into the water while angling near Charco del Viento, about 15 km west of Puerto de la Cruz. He was air‑lifted but was later declared dead, with no witnesses to confirm the cause of his fall.
Survivors with Minor Injuries Multiple Locations
Six French tourists were stranded by waves near Playa del Roque de Las Bodegas in Anaga, sustaining only moderate injuries. A man’s body was also recovered from the sea at El Médano on the island’s southern shore, with the exact impact of the waves unclear.
Authorities Warned of Dangerous Waves Earlier
Tenerife officials had issued early warnings, urging people to avoid cliffs, breakwaters and end‑of‑pier areas for safety and to refrain from filming the waves. Despite the alerts, many ignored the cautions.
