Tram Control Vehicle Collides With Mercedes, Flips Over; Three Workers Hospitalized

A Warsaw tram control vehicle rolled over after striking a Mercedes at Solidarności and Jana Pawła II avenues on 5 December, injuring three staff members and disrupting morning traffic.

Incident Overview

On Friday, 5 December at 6:55 a.m., the intersection of Solidarności Avenue and Jana Pawła II Avenue in Warsaw’s Wola district became the scene of a collision between a Warsaw Tramway Traffic Control vehicle and a Mercedes. The control vehicle, a Dacia, rolled over and three of its employees were taken to hospital.

The accident caused serious disruption to the morning traffic flow, affecting both local commuters and city buses.

Vehicle and Driver Conduct

During the incident, the tram control vehicle was actively using priority signals. Its drivers were heading to a derailed tram on the intersection of Targowa and 11 November when they entered the junction on a red light.

Witnesses stated that a passing car yielded to the control vehicle, but the Mercedes entered the intersection on a green light, striking the side of the Dacia.

Both the control vehicle’s driver and the Mercedes driver were found to be sober and possessed the required licenses.

Crash Mechanics and Injuries

The impact was severe enough to overturn the traffic control vehicle. Three employees, all workers of Warsaw Tramway Traffic Control, suffered injuries and were transported to hospital. The Mercedes driver emerged unhurt.

Traffic Disruptions

At the scene, traffic restrictions were enacted: the Jana Pawła II Avenue toward the city center was fully blocked, while the Solidarności Avenue toward Praga became partially impassable. Drivers had to take detours, leading to significant congestion during the morning rush and delays for public transport.

Investigations

Police are conducting an investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and causes of the crash. They are collecting road surface data, vehicle damage reports, and securing statements from participants and witnesses.
