Tram Riders Harassed for Speaking Ukrainian; Police Arrest Perpetrators

Two men in Poznań tram 13 attacked a Ukrainian couple for speaking Ukrainian, and authorities detained them on Sunday.

Tram Incident in Poznań

On Thursday evening, Poznań City Councilor Andrzej Prendke posted on social media that, moments before, two aggressive men had grabbed a Ukrainian man and his partner on tram 13 because the man was speaking Ukrainian.

Passenger Reaction and Escalation

Passengers initially spoke to the men verbally, then tried to separate the couple after the men threw punches. The men also threatened the passengers with physical assault.

Police Action and Legal Consequences

Police from the Poznań Nowe Miasto precinct arrested the two men, who face charges of discrimination. They could be sentenced to between three months and five years in prison.

Community Response

Although the Ukrainian couple was offered assistance and police witnesses were collected, they did not file a formal complaint until the officers intervened.
