Following his endorsement of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Donald Trump confirmed the United States will deploy 5,000 additional soldiers to Poland, marking a shift in recent rotational defense plans.
The Deployment Announcement
“Based on the successful election of the current Polish President, Karol Nawrocki, whom I proudly supported, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland,” Trump wrote.
A Reversal of Previous Trends
The declaration came unexpectedly late in the evening. The announcement follows recent reports from Reuters that the Pentagon had previously canceled a planned rotational deployment of approximately 4,000 soldiers from the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division.
Diplomatic Consultations
In recent days, Polish government officials maintained that U.S. decisions were temporary and logistical in nature. Deputy Defense Ministers traveled to Washington for talks regarding the U.S. military presence in Europe.
Future Military Presence
Following discussions in the U.S. capital, Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk stated that the United States would maintain a “high military presence” in Poland. Future details concerning U.S. forces in Europe are set to be coordinated through ongoing consultations with the Polish government.
