Kownacki Criticizes Tusk’s Absence from Davos
Polish opposition politician Bartosz Kownacki criticized former Prime Minister Donald Tusk for not being in Davos to meet with Donald Trump, claiming the Polish leader was skiing instead. Kownacki stated that when Trump sees such a “leader” in Poland, he may say he doesn’t respect such allies.
Polish Military Missions in Afghanistan and Iraq
Kownacki noted that Polish troops were engaged in missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. He stated that Poland had an opportunity to build its political position through these missions but unfortunately did not utilize this opportunity. Kownacki also mentioned that more Americans died in Afghanistan than citizens of other NATO countries.
Trump’s Comments on NATO Allies in Afghanistan
Donald Trump told Fox News that Americans “never needed” NATO allies. Trump acknowledged that allies sent troops to Afghanistan but claimed they “kept somewhat to the back, away from the front line.”
Casualties in the Afghanistan Mission
During the war in Afghanistan, approximately 3,000 NATO soldiers died, with over 2,400 being US citizens. The Polish Military Contingent operated in Afghanistan from 2002-2021, with 44 Polish soldiers losing their lives during this mission.
Kosiniak-Kamysz Defends Poland’s Role
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz responded to Trump’s remarks. He stated that Poland has always been, is, and will be a responsible and reliable ally that stands ready to defend when security is threatened. He emphasized that Polish troops fought alongside allies in missions in Afghanistan and Iraq, noting that the tragic moments when Polish soldiers died showed they were ready to pay the highest price for international and Polish security.
