Trump Declines Papal Call, Criticizes Pope’s Political Stance

Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated he will not contact Pope Leon XIV after publicly criticizing the pontiff’s views on foreign policy.

Trump Refuses to Engage with Pope

In an interview with CBS News, Trump said he has no plans to call Pope Leon XIV, whom he previously attacked on social media.

Trump accused Leon XIV of “liking criminals” and being “terrible” regarding foreign policy.

Context of the Criticism

Trump revealed he posted his criticism after watching “60 Minutes,” which featured Leon XIV’s disapproval of mass deportations and war with Iran.

“He doesn’t have it right on those issues,” Trump stated. “I don’t think he should be getting involved in politics. I think he probably drew that conclusion.”

Potential Papal Visit Uncertain

Trump expressed uncertainty about Pope Leon XIV visiting the United States during his presidency, stating, “I have no idea. It’s up to him, not me.”

Reaction to AI-Generated Image

Trump admitted he was surprised by the reaction from the Christian right to an AI-generated image depicting him in Jesus-like attire. The image was subsequently removed from his profile.

Trump claimed the image was created by a “very beautiful, talented artist” and he believed it was meant to portray him as a doctor, not Jesus.

He explained he removed the image because he “normally doesn’t like to do that, but I didn’t want people to be confused. People were confused.”

Trump’s Claim of Support for the Catholic Church

Trump asserted he has done “more for the Catholic Church than any other president in the last hundred years.”

“During the pandemic, I gave them billions of dollars. They were drowning. I gave them billions on education and that’s not a proper way to treat somebody who was so good,” he said.

Pope Leon XIV’s Response

Pope Leon XIV told reporters aboard a plane during a trip to Algeria that he will continue to advocate for peace and speak out against war, and that he is unafraid of the U.S. administration.

He also stated he has no intention of engaging in a discussion with Trump.
