President Donald Trump has granted the European Union until July 4 to implement a historic trade agreement before imposing higher tariffs on European automobiles.
Deadline for Trade Agreement
Following a conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the EU has until July 4 to fulfill its trade obligations with the United States. Failure to comply will result in increased tariffs on goods from the European Union.
Reversal of Tariff Plans
This decision marks a departure from earlier plans to increase tariffs on European vehicles this week. Trump disclosed the delay via a post on his Truth Social social media platform.
The Turnberry Agreement
Trump stated he has been waiting for the EU to honor the trade agreement established in Turnberry, Scotland, which he described as the largest trade deal in history. Under the agreement, the EU had promised to reduce tariffs to zero.
Potential Tariff Hikes
The President noted that if the EU does not meet its obligations by the United States’ 250th anniversary, tariffs will immediately rise to significantly higher levels. Last week, Trump had announced that tariffs on EU cars would increase from 15 percent to 25 percent.
