On January 14, Trump reiterated US need for Greenland for national security and missile defense, urging NATO to support the plan.
Trump’s Greenland Demand
On Wednesday, January 14, Donald Trump posted again stating that “the US needs Greenland for national security.” He then announced that it is “essential” for creating the Golden Dome, which is a missile defense system. The US President stated that NATO should enable Washington’s plans. “If we don’t do this, Russia or China will, and that won’t happen” – wrote Trump.
NATO’s Effectiveness Depends on US Control of Greenland
“Militarily, without the enormous power of the United States – a significant part of which I built during my first term, and now I am taking to a new, even higher level – NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent, not at all! They know this, I know this too. NATO becomes much more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the United States” – assessed Trump, and then excluded any other options.
Timeline for “Golden Dome” Questioned
According to BBC reports, the new missile defense system is to be created before Trump’s term ends. According to the defense editor of “The Economist” Shashank Joshii, this is however impossible. Retired US Navy officer Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery agreed with this opinion. “This is a project for five, seven, or even ten years if we want to do it well. In two years, certain elements may work and increase our security, but full protection will not be created so quickly” – said the expert to BBC.
EU Stands With Denmark and Greenland
The European Union has expressed support for Denmark and Greenland in response to Trump’s demands.
