US President Trump demanded immediate negotiations for the US to acquire Greenland during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21.
Trump’s Position on Greenland Defense
Donald Trump stated during the World Economic Forum in Davos that no country or group of countries, except the US, is capable of protecting Greenland. He emphasized America’s status as a great power, larger than people can comprehend.
The President suggested that establishing US military bases in Greenland would be a favor to Denmark and assured he does not intend to use force to acquire the island.
US Calls for “Immediate Negotiations”
Trump asserted that only the US can defend and develop Greenland’s vast territory of ice, making it beneficial and secure for both Europe and the United States. He demanded immediate negotiations to reconsider the US acquisition of Greenland.
He stated that similar territorial acquisitions have occurred throughout history and “there is nothing wrong with it.”
NATO Relations and Greenland
The President claimed that US acquisition of Greenland “will not be a threat to NATO” and would even strengthen its security. However, he criticized NATO for treating the US unfairly, stating the US has given much and received little in return.
Trump boasted that he has done more to help NATO than any other president, stating “you wouldn’t have NATO if I hadn’t been engaged during my first term.” He gave NATO “a choice” regarding Greenland – saying “yes” and they’ll be grateful, or “no” and they’ll remember it.
