Trump Downplays Orbán’s Defeat, Praises Successor

Former U.S. President Donald Trump reacted to Viktor Orbán’s loss in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, expressing support for the incoming Prime Minister, Péter Magyar.

Trump Reacts to Orbán’s Election Loss

U.S. President Donald Trump told ABC News he was not concerned by Viktor Orbán’s defeat in Hungary’s parliamentary elections on Sunday. He also stated he believes the new leader, Péter Magyar, will “do a good job,” describing him as a “good man.”

Trump added he wasn’t sure if his presence on the campaign trail would have made a difference, contrasting it with Vice President J.D. Vance’s support for Orbán. He reiterated his view that Orbán is “a good man.”

Magyar’s Victory Ends Fidesz Rule

Péter Magyar’s TISZA party secured a constitutional majority in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, ending Fidesz’s 16-year rule in Hungary.

Past U.S. Support for Orbán

The Trump administration had openly supported Orbán, and Trump recently pledged to strengthen Hungary’s economy “if Viktor Orbán and the people of Hungary need it.” He stated his administration was ready to use the full economic power of the United States, as it had done for “our Great Allies.”

Vice President J.D. Vance also encouraged voters to support Orbán in Budapest, describing him as a “fantastic guy” who has done a “great job” and brought “fundamental changes” to Hungary. Vance stated the U.S. supported Orbán because he opposed the “bureaucracy in Brussels” which he believes “does a lot of very, very bad things to the United States.”

Hungarian Media Views Election as Rejection of ‘MAGA’ Model

The Hungarian newspaper “Nepszava” commented that Orbán’s defeat was “more than a loss of an ally” for the American right, representing a collapse of the political model presented by the Trump administration to American voters.

The paper described the Hungarian election as a “change of regime” and a referendum on Trump-style politics, asserting that Hungarian voters rejected the ideology at the core of the American MAGA movement.
