President Trump discusses possible friendly takeover of Cuba amid economic crisis on the island.
Trump’s Cuba Remarks
President Trump told reporters before departing Washington that Cuban authorities are conducting talks with the US about a potential “friendly takeover” of the island. “They have serious problems. They have no money, they have nothing now,” Trump stated.
“It’s quite possible that a friendly takeover of Cuba will happen in many, many years. For years we’ve messed around with Cuba,” Trump added, noting that such a move could benefit Cuban immigrants living in the US.
Rubio Leading Cuba Talks
The US President assessed that Cubans want help from Washington and informed that high-level talks are being handled by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Rubio’s Family History Controversy
Rubio, son of Cuban immigrants who came to the US in 1956 during Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship, previously claimed his parents were forced to flee Cuba after Castro’s 1959 revolution. However, documents revealed by The Washington Post in 2011 contradicted this narrative.
Rubio later stated he was relying on a “family legend” rather than embellishing history, while admitting his parents had hoped to return to Cuba when conditions improved.
