Former U.S. President Donald Trump voiced his strong support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during a rally in Budapest addressed via phone to supporters.
U.S. Vice President Campaigns for Orbán
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance traveled to Budapest for a two-day visit to demonstrate support for Orbán before Sunday’s parliamentary elections. He participated in a joint press conference with the Hungarian Prime Minister and addressed a crowd in the capital.
During his speech, Vance connected a phone call with former President Trump, who enthusiastically affirmed his admiration for both Hungary and Orbán, stating they have a “fantastic” relationship.
Trump Declares Support for Orbán
Trump stated, “I am a fan of Viktor, I am on his side, the United States is with him.” He expressed his deep affection for Hungary and its leader.
Call for Orbán’s Re-election and Criticism of the Left
Vance urged supporters to re-elect Orbán, framing it as a defense of their shared civilization. He criticized “far-left ideology” spreading through academia, media, and bureaucracy, accusing it of undermining the foundations of Western civilization.
He specifically attacked what he described as the left’s negative views on tradition, borders, Christianity, and the family, and criticized “feminists” for policies he believes have led to increased violence against women by immigrants.
Defense of National Sovereignty and Criticism of Brussels
Vance emphasized the importance of rejecting “nameless bureaucrats” who would raise energy prices and open borders to “millions of unverified foreigners.” He accused “Brussels bureaucrats” of attempting to “destroy the Hungarian economy” due to their dislike of Orbán, calling the situation a form of foreign interference.
Polling Data and Election Context
The Hungarian parliamentary elections are scheduled for Sunday, April 12th. Recent polls show a close race, with Tisza leading Fidesz in most independent surveys. Median’s March poll gave Tisza 58% support and Fidesz 35%, while 21 Research Center’s April 1st poll showed 56% for Tisza and 37% for Fidesz.
Government-affiliated polls suggest a narrower lead for Orbán’s party. Vance concluded by urging voters to stand with Orbán, invoking the legacy of Saint Stephen, the patron saint of Hungary.
