A Pew Research Center poll reveals 61% of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, amid reports of potential military action.
White House Expectations and Iranian Response
The White House initially estimated any operation in Iran would last four to six weeks, aiming to eliminate nuclear facilities and potentially overthrow the regime. On Monday, Donald Trump stated Washington had “productive talks” with Tehran regarding a comprehensive resolution to Middle East conflicts. Iran, however, denied any negotiations took place.
Domestic Disapproval of Trump’s Iran Policy
President Trump’s decisions regarding Iran have not been met with enthusiasm within the United States. A Pew Research Center poll, conducted March 16-22 among 3,524 American adults, showed 61% disapprove of his approach to the Iran conflict, while 37% approve. A Quinnipiac poll from March 6-8, surveying 1,002 voters, found 38% supported Iran-related policies and 57% opposed.
Partisan Divide on Trump’s Actions
A significant majority of Democrats and independents disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the conflict (90%) and believe the US made the wrong decision to attack Iran (88%). Conversely, approximately seven in ten Republicans and those with similar views support Trump’s actions in Iran (69%) and believe the US made the right decision (71%).
Impact on Global Security: Conflicting Views
According to a Quinnipiac poll conducted March 19-23 among 1,191 registered voters, 42% believe a war with Iran would make the world less safe, 35% believe it would be more safe, and 20% see no change. Republicans (79%) are most likely to believe the conflict would improve security, followed by independents (25%) and Democrats (2%).
Analysis of Public Opinion
– “This war lies in the best interest of world prosperity? There is a huge divide between Democrats and Republicans, and independents are clearly skeptical,” commented Tim Malloy, a polling analyst at Quinnipiac University.
Potential Military Deployment and Island Occupation
President Trump postponed military action against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure. However, the New York Times reported Pentagon consideration of deploying around 3,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East. These forces could potentially be used to occupy Charg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub.
