Trump Fires Kristi Noem, Appoints New Homeland Security Chief

President Trump has dismissed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, replacing her with Markwayne Mullin.

Noem’s New Role

Former secretary Kristi Noem, who served well and had many spectacular successes, will become Special Envoy for the Shield of Americas, Trump’s new security initiative for the Western Hemisphere to be announced Saturday in Florida. Trump thanked her for her service.

Reasons for Dismissal

Media reported on Noem’s possible dismissal before Trump announced his decision. NBC News revealed Trump was outraged by Noem’s behavior during congressional hearings this week, where she was questioned about withholding funding from her department.

Trump was particularly dissatisfied with Noem’s testimony regarding her role in a $220 million advertising campaign aimed at encouraging immigrants to voluntarily leave the USA. Noem had approved contracts for this campaign.

Controversial Book

Noem was considered a strong candidate for Vice President during the 2024 campaign, as acknowledged by Trump himself. Her chances were damaged by her 2024 autobiography “No Going Back,” in which she wrote about shooting her one-year-old dog and described a goat as “disgusting” and “mean and nasty.”

When facing criticism, the governor defended herself by stating local law allows euthanizing dogs that kill livestock and that she never delegated her duties.

New Appointee

Markwayne Mullin, who has represented Oklahoma in the Senate for three years and previously served in the House for 10 years, will lead Homeland Security. Trump praised him as a “MAGA warrior” and “former undefeated professional MMA fighter” who possesses the wisdom and courage needed for the “America First” program.
