President Trump announces 10% tariffs on eight European countries that oppose his acquisition of Greenland, sparking intense backlash.
Trump’s Controversial Greenland Demand
President Donald Trump has decided to impose tariffs on eight European countries that strongly oppose his idea of acquiring Greenland. According to the U.S. president, the island is crucial for world security and should be governed by Americans.
Americans Will Bear the Cost
Analyst Brian Allen highlighted the direct consequences of Trump’s decision for American citizens. “Trump just announced 10% tariffs on goods from many European countries. From June, it will be 25% and will remain in effect until the U.S. ‘buys Greenland.’ So Americans will pay more at the cash register to finance his fantasy of holding Greenland hostage,” wrote Allen.
Kasparow: Trump Aids Russia, Not Counters It
Former world chess champion and prominent Kremlin critic Garry Kasparov was scathing in his assessment of Trump’s decision. “Trump imposes harsher sanctions on the murderous Russian dictatorship, an active enemy of the U.S. and its allies? No. He raises taxes on Americans to punish European allies over supposedly crucial Greenland and destroy NATO to Russia’s benefit,” wrote Kasparov.
“NATO is Dead”
Trump’s decision was interpreted by some commentators as an open attack on the alliance’s foundations. “The Wall Street Journal” reporter Yaroslav Trofimov simply wrote: “NATO is dead.” German journalist Julian Ropcke reacted even more strongly. “This is how imperialist despots act. That a U.S. president does this is unimaginable. Trump is destroying the transatlantic alliance. For us, this means one thing: more armies, more of our own weapons, more European security. The U.S. is withdrawing from the game,” wrote Ropcke.
Violation of Trade Agreements
Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt drew attention to the legal consequences of Trump’s decision. “Trump’s new tariffs are a clear violation of EU-US and UK-US trade agreements. If they take effect, the Union’s response must be equally clear. Playing soft is not an option,” wrote Bildt.
“Simply Stupid” and “Incompetence on Stilts”
Criticism also came from the American diplomatic establishment. Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul commented on the matter in one sentence: “This is simply stupid.” Former U.S. Secretary of State Richard Haass was even sharper. “We could have easily negotiated – and probably still can – economic and strategic solutions with Denmark and Greenland. Demands for ownership, threats, and tariffs are unnecessary and destructive. This is foreign policy incompetence on stilts,” assessed Haass.
Trump Supporters: “A Show of Strength”
However, there are also voices of support – though they don’t resonate as strongly as criticism of the U.S. president’s decision. Columnist Eric Daugherty called Trump’s decision “a show of strength.” “Trump imposes tariffs on Europe until the U.S. officially owns Greenland. WOW! Trump doesn’t play any games,” wrote Daugherty.
