During a White House press briefing, Donald Trump stated Iran wants to negotiate with the U.S., while questioning their current leadership and condition.
Trump on Potential Iran Deal
Donald Trump stated that Iran desires an agreement with the United States and is currently in communication with U.S. representatives. He noted, “They want to make a deal. They’re talking to our people.”
Trump added that he is personally involved in discussions, suggesting it could yield results, but cautioned, “I don’t know if they’re ready. They’re getting hit very hard.”
Uncertainty Over Iranian Leadership
President Trump also expressed uncertainty about the current state of affairs within Iran’s leadership. He stated the U.S. does not know who they are dealing with in Tehran.
“We don’t even know their leaders. All of their leaders are dead. We don’t know who we’re dealing with,” Trump said, adding that while some individuals want to negotiate, their identities remain unknown.
Concerns Regarding New Iranian Leader
Trump’s comments also addressed the new Iranian leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. The U.S. President stated that conflicting reports surround his health.
Doubts About Khamenei’s Health
Trump indicated that some reports suggest Mojtaba Khamenei is severely injured, while others claim he is deceased. He stated many people say he is “very badly damaged, that he lost a leg.”
Trump emphasized that no one claims the new Iranian leader is in full health, adding, “We haven’t seen him. That could be for many reasons. We don’t know if he’s alive or not. Nobody has seen him, it’s unprecedented.”
Trump Signals Willingness to Talk, With Reservations
This is not the first instance in recent days where Trump has signaled a willingness to engage in talks, but simultaneously cast doubt on the possibility of a swift agreement. He previously stated Iran wants a deal, but not on terms acceptable to Washington.
