Trump Joked About Greenland Invasion at Exclusive Club Meeting

US President Trump made controversial remarks about Greenland and Fed chair at private Alfalfa Club gathering.

Trump’s Greenland Joke

At a Saturday meeting of the exclusive Alfalfa Club, US President Donald Trump joked about invading Greenland, clarifying that he was joking but expressing interest in purchasing the territory. According to “The Washington Post,” Trump stated: “I have to cut my speech short to watch the invasion of Greenland. That was a joke. We’re not going to invade Greenland. We’re going to buy it.”

Trump added: “I never intended to make Greenland the 51st state. I want Canada to be the 51st state. Greenland would be the 52nd. Venezuela could be the 53rd.”

Comments on Fed Chair Candidate

Part of Trump’s speech was dedicated to Kevin Warsh, his nominee to head the Federal Reserve. Trump stated: “If he doesn’t lower interest rates, I’ll sue him,” adding “I’m joking” shortly after.

When questioned by reporters about these remarks, Trump responded: “That was a provocation, it’s a comedy show.”

Melania Trump Comments

The US President also mentioned his wife, Melania Trump, emphasizing that she speaks many languages. Trump stated: “When she’s angry at me, it’s like I’m in Davos again.”

Context

Trump has been discussing Greenland for several months. In January, he wrote: “NATO has been telling Denmark for 20 years that it must remove the Russian threat from Greenland. Unfortunately, Denmark was unable to do anything about it. Now the time has come and it will happen!!!”

The US President has expressed his desire for Kevin Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve, the American central bank, which he announced before the weekend.
