Trump Urges Zelensky to Act Quickly
US President Donald Trump stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky must accelerate efforts to reach an agreement ending the war. Trump believes Russia is ready to make peace, saying “Russia wants to make a deal.”
Before departing the White House, Trump said Zelensky “must act, must hurry” to bring about an agreement ending the war with Russia. When asked about the possibility of elections in Ukraine before summer, Trump said Zelensky cannot “miss a great opportunity” as Russia wants to make a deal.
Russia’s Alleged Peace Readiness Disputed
However, Trump’s claims about Russia’s willingness to compromise do not match reality. Russia shows no real intention to compromise in peace negotiations and continues military actions that oppose ending the conflict.
Moscow regularly bombs Ukraine and seeks to force concessions from Kyiv, which indicates it is not interested in reaching a genuine agreement.
Upcoming Geneva Talks Scheduled
The statements came amid media reports that Trump wants the war in Ukraine to end by this summer, before congressional elections become a priority in the US.
The next round of Ukraine-US-Russia talks will take place in Geneva on February 17-18, as confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Vladimir Medinsky, an advisor to Vladimir Putin, will head the Russian delegation.
Territorial Issues Remain Unresolved
Key issues remain unresolved, including the ownership of Donbas, Crimea, and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. Russia does not agree to concessions on these territorial matters.
Russian politicians suggest Moscow intends to continue the war until it achieves Ukraine’s complete capitulation.
