US President Donald Trump claims a “forever” Greenland agreement will give America “basically full access” to the island, as CNN reports no written documents exist.
Trump on “Eternal” Greenland Agreement
On Thursday, January 22, Donald Trump spoke with journalists aboard Air Force One, claiming the Greenland agreement would be valid “forever.” When asked what actions Americans could take after the agreement is signed, Trump replied: “We can conduct military operations, we can do whatever we want.”
“This is in the process of negotiation, we’ll see what happens. I think it will be good,” said Trump, according to reports including from “Kyiv Post.”
USA to Have “Basically Full Access” to Greenland
In a conversation with Fox Business Network, Trump reiterated that the agreement regarding Greenland has no time limit. He added that the United States will receive “basically full access” to the island.
According to Trump, this agreement represents a significant success in the field of security.
Trump’s Verbal Agreement with Rutte
CNN reported that no documents have been prepared so far regarding the Greenland agreement. The station reported that the agreements between Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are purely oral, which has caused confusion among members of the North Atlantic Alliance.
According to CNN, a document detailing the terms of the agreement will likely be prepared at the next working group meeting involving the USA, Denmark, and Greenland, potentially happening next week in Washington.
Updating the 1951 Agreement
Issues related to the presence of US troops in Greenland are currently regulated by a 1951 agreement between the USA, Denmark, and Greenland.
CNN reported that Trump and Rutte have agreed to continue talks about updating this agreement. The new agreement is intended to strengthen NATO’s role in Greenland and ensure that Russia and China are excluded from any investments on the island.
