Trump Reports Release of 250 Belarusian Political Prisoners, Eyes Meeting with Lukashenko

Donald Trump announced the release of another 250 Belarusian political prisoners secured through his envoy, signaling a potential future meeting with President Alexander Lukashenko.

Trump Announces Prisoner Release, Anticipates Meeting

Former President Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that his envoy, John Coale, negotiated the release of 250 political prisoners by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, bringing the total number freed since May of last year to over 500. Trump expressed his gratitude and anticipation for a meeting with Lukashenko at a future Peace Council session.

Potential Trump-Lukashenko Meeting on the Horizon

Belarus is a member of the Peace Council established by Trump, which invited dozens of nations but did not see Belarusian participation at its inaugural Washington D.C. meeting in February due to visa issues for Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhenkov. The Council aims to oversee a temporary “Palestinian technical government” in Gaza and assist in resolving other conflicts.

No Firm Date Set, White House Cautious

While no date has been set, Trump’s post suggests a possible meeting with Lukashenko, an idea previously hinted at by the Belarusian leader. This would mark their first encounter in over 30 years of Lukashenko’s rule.

Belarus Secures Prisoner Releases with Sanctions Relief

The White House acknowledged Trump’s willingness to meet with any leader beneficial to U.S. interests, describing the prisoner releases as a constructive step towards improving bilateral relations. They will assess further engagement based on continued progress.

Prisoner Releases Linked to Sanctions Easing

Over 500 prisoners have been released in multiple rounds, in exchange for the lifting of sanctions on Belarusian airlines and state-owned fertilizer companies, key exporters for the Belarusian economy.
