Trump Reverses Course, Vance to Travel to Islamabad Despite Security Concerns

Despite earlier statements citing security risks, Vice President Vance will lead the U.S. delegation to Islamabad for renewed talks with Iran, alongside Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Trump Initially Canceled Vance’s Trip

A high-ranking White House official confirmed to media that Vance will head the U.S. delegation, joining Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner. This announcement followed Trump’s earlier statements in phone conversations with various media outlets, indicating Vance would not travel to Islamabad due to security concerns.

Trump had explained that the Secret Service could not guarantee the Vice President’s safety with only 24 hours’ notice. However, a White House official told CNN that “the situation has changed.”

Timing of Second Round of Talks Uncertain

The exact date for the second round of talks with Iran remains unclear. Trump initially announced it would be Monday evening, but the “New York Post” reports it is scheduled for Tuesday.

Allegations Surface Regarding FBI Official’s Conduct

According to sources in “The Atlantic,” Kash Patel allegedly was so intoxicated that security agents struggled to wake him when needed. Maciej Czarnecki of Wyborcza.pl details these claims.

Trump Questioned Vance’s Performance in Initial Talks

Vance led the U.S. delegation during the first round of talks in Islamabad last weekend, which ended without a breakthrough. CNN reports that Trump has recently sought opinions from friends regarding Vance’s performance during this crucial mission, potentially influencing considerations of succession and competition with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump Considers Potential Trip to Pakistan

When asked by “NYP” if he would be willing to travel to Pakistan, Trump suggested “maybe at a later date,” depending on the progress of the talks. He previously stated he would be open to traveling to Pakistan to sign an agreement.

Iran Expects Trump’s Personal Involvement

CNN, citing Iranian sources familiar with the negotiations, reports that Iran anticipates the Iranian delegation will include Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, mirroring the composition of the previous round.

Potential for Symbolic Ceasefire Extension and Trump Visit

These sources indicate Iran expects a symbolic extension of the ceasefire to be announced on Wednesday. If talks proceed smoothly and Trump agrees to travel to Islamabad, Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian could also visit, potentially leading to a joint meeting and the signing of the “Islamabad Declaration.”

CNN’s reporting has not been confirmed by either side.

Iran Has Not Confirmed Participation

Iran has yet to confirm its participation in the negotiations, emphasizing that significant differences remain between the two sides. The current ceasefire is set to expire late Tuesday night.

Diplomatic Communications Underway

Araghchi and his Pakistani counterpart, Mohammad Iszak Dar, discussed the U.S.-Israel war with Iran via telephone on Sunday, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency. The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that President Pezeshkian is scheduled to speak with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later today.

Pakistan has been mediating between Tehran and Washington for several weeks, with Islamabad hosting the initial meeting last weekend.
