Following reports that the Pentagon planned to reduce US forces in Europe, Donald Trump announced a deployment of 5,000 additional soldiers to Poland after receiving direct text messages from President Karol Nawrocki.
Pentagon Realignments and Delayed Deployments
Recent reports from Reuters and CNN indicated that the Pentagon had moved to cancel the rotation of 4,000 American troops to Poland. Officials suggested this was part of a broader strategy to reduce the number of US soldiers stationed across Europe.
US Department of Defense spokesperson Sean Parnell later confirmed that the number of Brigade Combat Teams in Europe would be reduced from four to three. Officials described the resulting impact on the Polish rotation as a temporary delay rather than a complete withdrawal.
Diplomatic Efforts and Direct Presidential Intervention
In response, high-ranking Polish officials initiated emergency consultations. Chief of the General Staff, Minister of Defense Cezary Tomczyk, and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz engaged with their US counterparts, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, to address the status of the American military presence.
Newsweek reports that President Karol Nawrocki was surprised by the news and sought to resolve the issue directly with Donald Trump. After failing to arrange a phone call, Nawrocki sent text messages to Trump, referencing their previous discussions regarding the potential for a permanent American troop presence in Poland.
Outcome of the Negotiations
On Thursday, May 21, President Trump announced that the US would increase its military presence in Poland. He cited his relationship with President Nawrocki and his support for the Polish president’s electoral success as reasons for the decision to send an additional 5,000 soldiers to the country.
