U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his interest in Greenland and expressed dissatisfaction with NATO allies on April 9th.
Donald Trump on NATO: “Disappointing”
“None of those people, including our very disappointing NATO, understood the danger until it was brought to their attention!!!” – stated the U.S. President on Thursday, April 9th. He did not specify who the “people” were or to what his statement specifically referred.
Trump Reminds NATO of Greenland
The American president posted that he again accused allies of not supporting the United States in a war with Iran and will not do so in the next crisis. He also referred to NATO’s opposition to U.S. claims to Greenland. “REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, BADLY MANAGED PIECE OF LAND!!!” he emphasized.
Concerns Over Financial Commitments
According to reports from Reuters, Trump told the NATO Secretary General that he expects concrete commitments from allies within the next few days regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
Rutte’s Response to Trump’s Threats
Trump published the post after a Wednesday, April 8th, conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, amid threats of potential U.S. withdrawal from the Alliance.
In an interview with CNN, Rutte, when directly asked if Trump had announced his intention to leave NATO, repeatedly responded evasively.
“He is clearly disappointed with many NATO allies and I understand his point of view,” said the Secretary General. He noted, however, that he consistently pointed out to Trump examples of how the Alliance had risen to the occasion.
