Following elections in Hungary, Donald Trump avoided questions about Viktor Orbán’s loss while Barack Obama praised the win for democracy.
TISZA Party Secures Supermajority
The TISZA party has won a constitutional majority in Hungary. Viktor Orbán congratulated Péter Magyar on his victory. Journalists from Wyborcza.pl, TOK FM, and Radio Zet are reporting from Budapest.
Nearly 99% of votes have been tallied from Sunday’s (April 12th) elections. TISZA is projected to win 138 seats in the 199-seat parliament, exceeding the 133 seats needed for a constitutional majority.
Trump Administration Backed Orbán During Campaign
During the Hungarian campaign, the Donald Trump administration openly supported Viktor Orbán. On April 7th, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance appeared at a rally in Budapest, where he put Trump on speakerphone.
Trump reportedly told Vance, “I love Hungary and I love Viktor, I have to say that he’s a fantastic guy, we have a really great relationship, he’s doing a great job.”
Trump Ignores Questions on Orbán’s Loss
Journalists asked Donald Trump for comment on the Hungarian election results. Trump ignored the questions and ended his conversation with reporters.
Obama Celebrates Victory for Democracy
Barack Obama stated, “Yesterday’s victory for the opposition in Hungary, like the elections in Poland in 2023, is a victory for democracy not only in Europe, but around the world. It is above all a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people—and a reminder to all of us to relentlessly pursue justice, equality, and the rule of law.”
Péter Magyar Declares Victory
Péter Magyar stated, “We did it. TISZA and Hungary won the election. And not barely, but very. Very, very we won. Together we liberated Hungary.” He noted that TISZA received unprecedented support, with approximately 3.3 million votes.
Tusk Congratulates Magyar, Plans Warsaw Visit
Several European leaders have congratulated Péter Magyar on his win. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a conversation with Magyar, noting that Magyar indicated Warsaw as his first visit destination.
Tusk also posted on X, “Hungary, Poland, Europe together again! Wonderful victory, dear friends! Ruszkik haza!” (“Ruszkikhaza” means “Russians go home” in Hungarian).
