Trump Threatens Cuba, Links It to Iran Policy

Donald Trump suggested Cuba could be next in line for U.S. action, following his rhetoric regarding Iran and the blockade of Iranian ports.

Trump Links Cuba to Iran

Donald Trump discussed Cuba while responding to questions about Iran and the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. He stated, “We could stop, coming back from Iran.” This connection arose as Trump simultaneously threatened Tehran with the destruction of Iranian vessels approaching the Strait of Hormuz.

Al Jazeera noted this series of statements as part of a broader escalation of Washington’s rhetoric towards its adversaries.

Cuba Returns in Trump’s Remarks

This is not the first time Trump has linked Iran and Cuba. Reuters reported on March 5th that the U.S. president spoke of wanting to “finish” the matter of Iran before turning to Cuba, stating it would be “a matter of time.” Western media view today’s statement not as a random digression, but as a signal that Havana remains a political target.

Cuba Responds: “We Will Defend Ourselves”

Cuba previously issued a strong statement. President Miguel Díaz-Canel told NBC, “We will defend ourselves and if we have to die, we will do it,” adding that Cubans are “prepared to give their lives for the revolution.”

Havana remains open to dialogue with the U.S., but without concessions on its political system or acceptance of U.S. conditions, signaling continued tension between Washington and Havana.

Tensions Rise

In recent weeks, tensions between Washington and Havana have visibly increased. The Trump administration has intensified pressure on Cuba, with the president previously suggesting that Cuba would be next after Iran. Today’s statement aligns with a broader trend of increasingly assertive U.S. policy towards Havana.

A clear signal of this pressure was cutting off the island nation from oil supplies, exacerbating its existing crisis due to its dependence on Venezuelan deliveries, which were halted after the arrest of Nicolás Maduro.
